Congratulations Gus for AFI nomination!

A big congrats to Gus Kemp who filmed HOME for his nomination for Best Cinematography in a Documentary at this years Australian Film Institute Awards 2010. The documentary “Strange Birds in Paradise” filmed primarily in West Papua and Papua New Guinea under the guise of ‘tourists’ (because journalists are banned from West Papua). This documentary, directed by Charlie Hill-Smith was selected for IDFA in 2009 and has gone on to screen in a variety of Australian and International festivals as well as being nominated for 4 AFI awards for: Best Feature Length Documentary, Best Direction in a Documentary, Best Sound in a Documentary and Best Cinematography in Documentary.

Gus is becoming well known for his diverse styles and strength in lighting and shot design.

Sound mix plus sounds you never think you hear. But I do now!

A couple of wonderful days down at Music and Effects in South Yarra. Special thanks to Doron, Cassie and especially to Brendon, who rebuilt the soundtrack from scratch! What a great studio and seeing the film on the big screen. Wow! Now onto a tweek with the colour grade and mastering with the crew at Digital Pictures.

HOME and the road to post production.

Hi Folks,

It’s been awhile. Pleased to claim that sound mix at the wonderful Music and Effects will be taking place this Thursday and on the following Wednesday were at Digital Pictures doing the final mastering of the film. Its been a long journey home, pardon the pun. However I feel that all cast, crew and post-production peeps, including sound freak Den Belmont have wonderfully put this little short together.

I’ll be back with more after the colour grade. Bye for now! Thomas

A short film called HOME.

How this little film came into being. HOME the screenplay written by Cameron Moloney, was chosen as one of four films to be made as part of RAW NERVE 2010, an initiative that has been running for a number of years through Open Channel Melbourne and screen partner Screen Australia. Funding and assistance was provided by Open Channel with Marc Gracie acting as Executive ProducerĀ and Angela Lee as Line Producer. Both have had a close watch over all four projects to ensure deadlines are met and to give general guidance through schedules and casting.

Well, after a grueling month or so of pre-production and organising by producer Michael De Robbio, the film was shot over three days by cinematographer Angus Kemp down on the Mornington Peninsula in the beautiful coastal town of Mount Martha. The footage looks wonderful, as Gus did a fantastic job.

We were lucky to have a great crew as well as a fantastic cast featuring Austin Turner as Ryan the lead and Hannah Jones from Helen Pandos Management playing Ryan’s level headed girlfriend Penny. Everybody worked extremely hard on the intense schedule, particularly on Saturday’s shoot which left us all exhausted!

Over the next few weeks we’re heading into post-production, which will entail a rough edit, sound design and mix before the film’s sent off to Digital Pictures in Melbourne for a fine tune on the colour grade.

I particularly want to thank Elliott Klein who did on-set sound and Ian Dart our gaffer who put up with my retakes. Also on the thank you list is local actor Erik Donnison who played Frank Taylor and Tricia Hutchison, our makeup artist from Sistars makeup, who did a wonderful job making Erik look thoroughly deceased! Tricia’s son Dale also helped out, doing the clapper on a couple of night shoots. It certainly was a small crew, however we pulled together some really big scenes.

I must say its been a while since I’ve dipped into drama and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The magic of bringing characters from a script to life is truly an awesome experience and now I can’t wait to go back for more. But first, it’s back to the all important offline edit!

Talk soon!
